Open Men’s Basketball Team

Happy New Year from Santiago!

Friday got off to a late start following the New Year celebrations.  Anton welcomed the year with a win over Chile which placed him in the Bronze medal game.  Lauren will also be playing for Bronze tomorrow and our basketball team will be facing Mexico early in the morning.

Friday was a special day as we learned again that Maccabi is a world-wide family and a unique organization.  Maccabi USA along with the organizing committee have arranged for eye exams and free glasses for over 1,000 children in San Bernardo, a low income community in Santiago.  Team USA donated 2 ophthalmic machines to the Mayor of San Bernardo in the Maccabi Stadium “Estadio Israelita Maccabi”.

We continued the day with a Shabbat service led by Rabbi Carlos Tapiero of Maccabi World Union.  The service was held outdoors with the Santiago mountains as a backdrop.  We sang and prayed and welcomed Shabbat in an emotional and meaningful ceremony.  Following the ceremonies we enjoyed a festive dinner and a much deserved rest today.

We have one more full day in Santiago, Chile and we will be heading home after the finals on Monday.

What an exciting day we had today! Our boys made history by being the first Canadian Open Men’s basketball team to ever beat Team USA.  After what was a tight, intense, and nerve racking game Canada clinched the game with an 82 to 75 win.

To celebrate the entire delegation toured a local winery, had an enlightening lesson about wine and its creation, and enjoyed a delicious dinner.

Tomorrow our basketball team we will be facing Guatemala and our tennis players will be back in action.

The festivities and celebrations continue as we enjoyed wonderful activities at the Hebreica, the Maccabi Sport Club, with a presentation about the history of women in sport, a synchronized swimming demonstration at the pool, and a party.  We are all looking forward to the New Year’s Eve celebrations and to welcoming 2016 in sunny Santiago.

December 28, 2015 Day 2

A busy day for Team Canada.
We started our morning at the Colegio Sagrados Corazones basketball court where our team faced Argentina for their first game. Team Canada played a tight game but was unable to beat the Argentinians.
On the tennis court Lauren and Anton had a great day and won 6-1, 6-1 and
6-3, 6-0 respectively in their singles matches against Chilean athletes.

Tonight we attended the opening ceremonies of the Pan American Games. The parade of delegations was exciting and emotional as 15,000 spectators cheered for team Canada as we walked in. The lighting of the torch was unique and emotional as the organizing committee chose to honour six different people, who have made a meaningful difference in the world, to light the torch together.

More action on the courts tomorrow as we face Team USA in what will be a crucial game.
