Maccabi U17 Team captures CAF Mens Soccer Title
Maccabi’s U17 Rep Soccer team entered the CAF Mens league this summer to continue their competitive soccer play. The league appeals to athletes as it offers the flexibility to accommodate players who spend time at camp or participated in Israel youth programs.
Coach Jason Mausberg, who has been coaching this team for the last eight years, set realistic goals to finish in the top four this year.
The season started off slowly, opening with a loss followed by one win and two ties. But, as has been the case over the years, the extremely bright group of players learned very quickly. They finished the season undefeated and captured the league title.
“Learning to compete and win at the mens level takes time,” said Jason. “Each game we were outsized and outmuscled on an individual level. As a team they worked together and overcame the differences with team play, individual intelligence and an uncanny knack to figure out what was needed to win.”
The nucleus of the squad, 14 of the 17 players, represented Canada in the U16 competition at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. At those Games, Team Canada finished a remarkable fourth, narrowly losing out on the bronze medal. This season, the Maccabiah alumni were joined by veterans from prior years as well as U18 alumni from the 2017 Maccabiah Games.
Congratulations on a successful season!
