Juniors are athletes under 19 years of age as of December 31, 2017 (birth years for junior athletes for the 20th Maccabiah Games are athletes born 1999 or later). The minimum age to participate in the Games is 15 years old for most sports. In some sports such as Gymnastics and Swimming, and in some cases such as exceptionally talented athletes, an exception can be made to allow younger athletes to compete. The decision to allow a younger athlete to participate in the Games is at the discretion of Maccabi Canada, and must be approved by the organizing committee.
Youth – in Soccer and Basketball, the Junior male category is further divided into two sub-categories: Juniors and Youth. Hockey only has a Youth division. The Junior Male category in Soccer and Basketball consists of athletes born in the years 2001 and 2002 while the Youth consists of athletes born in the years 1999 and 2000. Youth athletes will be governed by the Junior policies.
In order to participate in a tryout, a parent/legal guardian of all junior age athletes must complete a tryout waiver.
Junior athletes and staff will travel from June 29- July 19, 2017* and will participate in the Junior Delegation Israel Experience program. In some sports, junior athletes and staff must be available to participate in a training camp that will take place in Toronto 2-3 days prior to departure.
Junior athletes and staff must travel with the delegation to and from Israel, and must stay in the junior village assigned to the Canadian junior team by Maccabi World Union. In addition to training and competition, all junior athletes and staff must participate in all educational and social activities planned for them by Maccabi World Union and Maccabi Canada.
Athlete registration is now closed. For additional information please contact Maccabi Canada’s Athletic Director, Ashley Kochman at ashley@maccabicanada.com.
Parents: Parents of junior athletes cannot visit their children at the accommodation centre, nor can they sign them out for family trips or visits. Parents are encouraged to come and cheer on their children at the competition venues. Junior athletes are the responsibility of Maccabi Canada’s staff between June 29 and July 19, 2017*, and must comply with all policies. Parents and athletes must adhere to Maccabi Canada’s code of conduct and be respectful and cooperative with our staff at all times. Misbehaviour or misconduct by parents will result in their child’s immediate removal from the team. In case of an emergency during the Games, parents will be notified by the appropriate person responsible for their child. All non-emergency communication with parents in Israel will be done through our communications team.
Parent Code of Conduct: The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”
I therefore agree:
Staff: The Israel Experience and the Junior accommodation centre will be run by a dedicated Canadian team which includes a doctor, therapists, chaperones, coaches, managers, logistics and communication people. In addition to their specific job description, all junior staff roles include a supervisory aspect during off-time and on weekends, and must attend all educational programs planned for the junior delegation by Maccabi World Union’s organizing committee and by Maccabi Canada. Junior staff will also have the responsibility of reporting to and communicating with parents prior to the Games. In case of an emergency during the Games, parents will be notified by the appropriate person responsible for their child. All non-emergency communication with parents in Israel will be done through our communications team.
