15th Maccabiah 1997
The 15th Maccabiah Games, Israel’s 50th year of Independence, hosted competition to 5,500 athletes representing 50 countries. The Games were marred by the collapse of the bridge built over the Yarkon marching into the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv for the Opening Ceremony. With deep sadness many Australian athletes were injured and 4 died in the tragedy. The team continued to compete in honour and memory of their teammates.
